Lifestyle extravaganza offers spectacular array of walks and talks

20-30 October

The online programme for this year’s art, food and outdoor extravaganza – Garden Town Stellenbosch – has gone live! South Africa’s favourite City of Oaks is all set for the 10-day event that caters to diverse interests and for the whole family. Expect a showcase of the region’s best, including food and wine as well as gardens, large and small, when Garden Town Stellenbosch takes place from 20-30 October.

Organised by all the town’s main tourism stakeholders, the event draws in many well-known names including the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden, Rupert Museum, Quoin Rock, Ernst van Jaarsveld, Lanzerac and Babylonstoren, while also touching the lives of people in communities such as Dwarsrivier, Pniël, Jamestown, Kayamandi, Ida’s Valley and Klapmuts, to name a few.

It encompasses activities from horticultural tours to floral art; dining to hiking; and, guest garden specialists too. Experience DIY vegetable gardening, wine tasting, painting, guided bird walks, wreath making, moss garden tours, honey sensory analysis and much more. The Stellenbosch CBD will also be decorated with colourful craft flowers, upcycled flower garlands and mobile installations, so come even if it’s just to see the spectacle!

The programme of events kicks off with a grand flower parade, the official launch of Garden Town Stellenbosch at 18:00 on 20 October – and everyone is invited.

Garden Town Stellenbosch promises lush bouquet of flowers, food, wine & art

20-30 October

One of the country’s most prominent garden lifestyle festivals returns after its inauguration last year, promising a fresh milestone for South Africa’s favourite village of oaks. Stellenbosch once again pulls out the stops for gardeners and lovers of the great outdoors in a 10-day long festival that will transform its streets and surrounding countryside from 20 to 30 October.

Garden Town Stellenbosch, inspired by the world-famous flower festival of Girona, Spain, will encompass everything from horticultural tours to flower art; dining to hiking; and, guest garden specialists, all in a majestic setting. DIY vegetable gardening, wine tasting, painting, guided bird walks, wreath crafting, moss educationals, drawing with thread, honey sampling and much more – it’s all on the programme this year.

Garden Town Stellenbosch is an initiative of Visit Stellenbosch, which comprises the region’s tourism stakeholders and partners, including the Stellenbosch Municipality and Stellenbosch Wine Routes. The objective is to grow the tourism and experience economy in Stellenbosch for the benefit of all communities. It draws in many well-known properties and personalities including the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden, Rupert Museum, Quoin Rock, Ernst van Jaarsveld, Lanzerac and Babylonstoren, while also touching the lives of people in the communities of Kayamandi, Ida’s Valley and Klapmuts.

During the festival, the Stellenbosch CBD will be decorated with a flower theme and prominent installations. As with last year’s event, colourful floral displays will be added to public spaces in Bird Street. Look out for cars, bicycles, a Harley Davidson motorcycle and trolley adorned with flowers and on display around town.

Flowerise yourself

The programme of events kicks off with a grand flower parade, the official launch of Garden Town Stellenbosch on 20 October. And everyone is invited! This is your invitation to dress up to the theme. If you need help, there will be a stall at the Braak – the departure point – selling appropriate paraphernalia.

The parade will be followed immediately by a floral version of the town’s summer pop-up street soirees – a Garden Soiree. This takes place from 19:00 to 21:00 at the recently landscaped gardens at Voorgelegen.

Numerous presentations and installations will take place at the Stellenbosch Town Hall, in the heart of town. These are organised by the Western Cape Association for Flower Arrangers (WCAFA). There will be participation by flower clubs as well as workshops and flower arrangement educationals and master classes from 22 to 29 October. The Town Hall will also host an art exhibition by The Voice Collective.

Gardens on show

Private home gardens will open to visitors on Friday, 21 October and 28 October, and Saturday, 22 October and 29 October. Visitors are advised to check the programme to see which gardens are open when. An entrance fee of R20 per garden will be charged. Alternatively, a weekend passport may be purchased that gives access to all the gardens for a once-off fee of R200.

Some private gardens will be the subject of a new competition. The municipality’s inaugural Mayoral Garden Competition will showcase gardens in new housing and community developments. Five new housing areas were identified to be considered: Mandela City, Klapmuts; Hillside, Ida’s Valley; Watergang, Kayamandi; Jamestown, and, LaMotte, Franschhoek.

Famous gardens of the region have naturally been dressed up to show their best during the event, including Old Nectar, Babylonstoren, Hawksmoor, Schoongezicht at Rustenberg, and Aspidistra and Bonne Esperance. Check the programme for respective opening times.

Many of these will present workshops as well as talks and tours. Babylonstoren, for example, will demonstrate the making of a tussie mussie; focus on the work of bees during a guided walk; host a tour by Ernst van Jaarsveld of its special collections as well as a tour through its kitchen garden.

Workshops will also be presented in Stellenbosch Kloof’s Canettevallei, famous for its lavender products. These talks include the making of Protea origami, a lavender wand, natural soap, and a lavender talk and wine tasting.

At Joostenberg wine estate, a Spring farm walk will be presented – the perfect way to enjoy the beautiful outdoors of Stellenbosch.

Boschendal’s Farm Tours are a guided walking tour offering rare personal insight into the history of the farm, regenerative farming practices and sustainable gardening while experiencing and enjoying the beauty of the farm and its gardens. Guests will also be harvesting seasonal herbs from their herb garden whilst the farm’s soil to fork philosophy, and future plans to preserve the beautiful surrounds will also be shared.

Join the fun at AFGRI Paul Roos Spring Fair

This year Paul Roos Gymnasium will host the AFGRI Spring Fair from 22 October, which takes place at the Markötter Sports Complex. The outdoor market will focus on food, wine, garden and home produce. It includes the C2M Kiddies Garden which will be jam-packed with entertainment for the young ones. As an extension of the AFGRI Spring Fair, Paul Roos is hosting an array of activities during Garden Town. They include the ABSA Art Garden; the C2M High Tea with Dr Darren Green; workshops focusing on the art of bonsai, the wonders of fermentation and eco-printing; a special event with writers and travellers Erns Gründling and Lindie Stander, and two special AFGRI-hosted family events.

For more information about all the upcoming garden festival events and bookings, go to VisitStellenbosch.org or call 021 886 4310. The Garden Town website – www.gardentown.visitstellenbosch.org – goes live on Spring Day, September 1, providing dates, times, locations and relevant costs.

Professor Thuli Madonsela has been described as a “national treasure” and soon she plans to celebrate her milestone 60th birthday on 28 September in a fitting way – by raising money for a good cause through a silent auction of a recently completed oil painting of her by celebrated South African artist Shany van den Berg.

Madonsela is the Law Trust Chair in Social Justice and Law Professor at the University of Stellenbosch, where she conducts and coordinates social justice research and she teaches constitutional and administrative law. She is also the founder of the Thuma Foundation, an independent democracy leadership, and literacy social enterprise.

An Advocate of the High Court of South Africa and former Public Protector of South Africa, Madonsela has been a lifelong activist on social justice, constitutionalism, human rights, good governance, and the rule of law. Named one of TIME100’s most influential people in the world, in 2014 and Forbes Africa Person of the Year in 2016, Prof Thuli Madonsela is one of the drafters of South Africa’s Constitution and co-architect of several laws that have sought to anchor South Africa’s democracy.

On meeting Madonsela Shany van den Berg said she was struck by her soft-spoken, kind and powerful female presence. “Her energy filled the room and our conversation. I took this moment into my studio and let it guide me while painting her. My aim was to capture her elegance and her graciousness and the unique energy that shines,” Van den Berg explains.

She is an internationally recognised artist known for specializing in contemporary portraiture and figurative work with a strong central theme of womanhood. Her ethereal oil paintings evoke the mood and texture of Old Master paintings, conveying complex emotions, moods and ideas through meticulous attention to detail, an extraordinary facility with paint and subtle symbolism.

Globally renowned, Van den Berg has participated in numerous group exhibitions since 1990 and in private collections including in South Africa, Ghana, London, France, Germany, Australia, Luxenburg, the Caymen Islands and U.S.A.

The proceeds of the silent auction of Madonsela’s portrait will go to Stellenbosch University’s #Action4Inclusion initiative, launched in 2020. The funds raised via #Action4Inclusion are used to support students who cannot register for the next academic year owing to outstanding fees, as well as graduates who cannot access their academic records upon graduation, thereby hampering their capacity to contribute to a talented workforce.

Reflecting on turning 60, Madonsela said she is grateful for reaching this milestone.

“As I approach my birthday, I have been reflecting with gratitude on the fact that I once told young girls that it’s vital that every girl determines as early as possible, who she is and what her contribution to humanity will be. This also applies to boys.

“I was immensely privileged to discover and have my life anchored in this truth as early as my teenage years. This was the point when I joined the struggle that yielded the political and legal freedoms that are today’s foundation for expanding the frontiers of freedom for all.

“I am grateful to all who have guided, supported, and walked with me in this remarkable journey. Among those who supported me to get educated apart from my parents, are kind strangers, including the United Nations community, John Daniel, and Dr Beyers Naude.

“These encounters became bridges of hope for me which I believe should be experienced by all particularly children and young people.

“To pay it forward, I have twice summited Mount Kilimanjaro to harvest sanitary pads for girls while combating poverty and stigma under the #Trek4Mandela initiative. I have supported the call for free education. I am honoured to be a co-founder of the #Action4Inclusion initiative, with young Maties leaders.

“The purpose of #Action4Inclusion is to help young people reach their potential so they have the same opportunity I have been blessed with, to be able to serve society at my fullest potential. Many have graduated because of this initiative and are now contributing meaningfully to our society, our environment, and the world.

“I call upon you to play your part to support this student debt relief initiative and other social justice advancing measures as an Ubuntu gesture and contribution to the constitutional commitment to establish a new society that is based on social justice, as one of three pillars. Thank you for serving as bridges of hope,” Madonsela said.

The 94cm by 74cm oil painting of Madonsela will be sold through a silent auction and the highest bidder will not only receive a memorable artwork but will also have the opportunity to have lunch with Madonsela.

Over the past two years, behind closed cellar doors and in the historic Manor House, the Morgenster team has been hard at work, planning every detail of their re-launch in a move that continues to honour the timeless traditions and unwavering quality the estate is so renowned for, all the while embracing generational change in an exciting evolution for Morgenster Estate.

The family-owned estate is committed to the future and see this rebrand as the perfect opportunity to modernize and bring the brand-story full circle into a new era, whilst building on their legacy and introducing Morgenster to a wider audience who can grow with the estate.

The innovation continues throughout the farm and into the vineyards, where sustainable efforts are being prioritized by the talented young woman and winemaker, Yolande van Staden, heading the team and under the mentorship of Christopher Keet.

Focused on the future and with a vision that is cemented through a united Mother-Daughter team, passionately propelling Morgenster into a new era, this is the first of many exciting future developments for this family-run estate.

Patrons of the brand will see the symbolic star ‘Morgen ‘ster’ in the new logo design, showcasing the Morgenster ‘M’ and the famous ‘Morning Star’ in an exciting design shift into modernity for this iconic estate. When asked on the intention behind the change, Federica Bertrand has this to say: “Our focus was to revisit our origin, allowing us to get to the true essence of our brand image and story. The new design is minimalistic and modern, allowing the exceptional quality of the wines to speak for themselves.”

There is also a new tribute range of The Italian Collection wines planned for founder Giulio Bertrand and in true Italian style it is created with the intention of celebration. A way of honouring the immense legacy and pioneering vision of Morgenster’s founder, this range has new life breathed into it and is the ultimate passion project for the entire team.

Realising and acting on opportunity for growth, combined with youthful energy and incredible drive from the women-led team who continue to steer the estate forward, with the focus remaining on quality at the very core of the Morgenster brand.

“We strive for quality in every aspect at Morgenster Estate and we are unwaveringly committed to preserving our hidden gem in the heart of the Helderberg. From our sustainably focused farming efforts, to communication, relationships, and ultimately how we manage our greatest assets – our people, and of course, our nature.” – Federica Bertrand
